NEHARI was established under the Brahmaputra Board located at Rudreswar, North Guwahati as per Clause 7 of Assam Accord, 1985 and operationalized during 1996. It’s primary aim is to conduct research and provide solutions for water resource management, flood control, irrigation, and related hydraulic engineering challenges.

Functions and Activities : Material testing, carrying out Hydraulic model studies etc. The institute conducts training programs and workshops to disseminate knowledge and skills.

Infrastructure and Facilities : Various Laboratories such as Hydraulic Laboratory with model trays and flumes and Laboratories for testing soil, concrete, other construction materials and foundation rock exist in the institute.

Rejuvenation and Renovation of NEHARI has been launched with following components :

1. Training of manpower at institutes of repute like CWPRS, Pune and CSMRS, New Delhi.
2. Replacing the old irreparable machineries / equipment with latest laboratory machineries / equipment & Repair the repairable machineries / equipment
3. Renovation of infrastructure at NEHARI
